Chatsworth & The Lake District

Tour Overview

Multi-Day Tour – 3 Days.

Day 1 – Chatsworth House

Starting in the Cotswolds, your guide will be waiting to meet you at your pre-arranged collection point to start your journey. You’ll first head north to spend the day at Chatsworth House – one of Derbyshire’s finest country houses – with the chance to stop for lunch before exploring over 30 rooms in the house, including the Painted Hall, State Rooms and Sculpture Gallery. You’ll have the opportunity to discover the art, history and 16 generations of ownership under the Cavendish family. The gardens of Chatsworth then provide a further 105-acres to behold, including historic and modern waterworks, sculptures and mazes – there’s truly something for everyone.

You will then make your way to your evening accommodation.

Day 2 – Coniston Water, Grasmere, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, Windermere

After breakfast, you’ll drive from Derbyshire up to the Lake District where you’ll arrive in Coniston Water, the fifth-largest of the lakes, where you’ll have a chance to stretch your legs and stop for lunch.

Next you’ll head up to Grasmere, which thanks to Wordsworth, is likely the region’s most well-known village. Here you’ll also visit Dove Cottage, Wordsworth’s home where he wrote the majority of his poetry. The cottage is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at your accommodation for the evening in Windermere, where you’ll have time to relax and take in the sights of the town and enjoy dinner.

Day 3 – Ambleside, Rydal Mount & Gardens, Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top

On your last day in the Lake District, you’ll have time in the morning to explore the town and take in the fantastic scenery of the largest lake in the district, before heading to Ambleside at the head of Windermere Lake. Here you’ll visit Rydal Mount and Gardens, the William Wordsworth’s family home with 5 acres of gardens to also explore.

After a stop at Rydal Water, for the final visit during your tour of the southern region of the Lake District, you’ll head to Hill Top in Hawkshead, the famous home of Beatrix Potter. Originally bought with the income from publishing the Tale of Peter Rabbit, this is where you’ll see the property where she was inspired to write many more stories for her characters. Stroll along the route from the house and enjoy the idyllic cottage-garden, filled with flowers and vegetables.

Later, you’ll then work your way back to your tour start point and depart from your guide to finish your 3 day trip, back in the north Cotswolds or other pre-arranged point.

If you would like to stay an additional day in the Lake District, this is not a problem and the itinerary can be adjusted accordingly to suit your preferred length of trip. Likewise, any requests for other attractions or locations to visit can be incorporated into a bespoke itinerary.
