Downton Abbey Village & The Cotswolds

Tour Overview

8 hours

Spend the day exploring the filming locations for Downton Abbey, the world-famous ITV period drama series, right here in the Cotswolds.

During your day, you’ll walk the streets of the fictional village of Downton (the small hamlet of Bampton, Oxfordshire) and see the buildings used for Isobel Crawley’s house and Downton Hospital. Visit the Church used for weddings, funerals and christenings. Walk down Church View to see the houses used for the fictional pubs; The Grantham Arms and The Dog & Duck. It won’t take long for you to begin to imagine yourself suspended in time walking alongside the aristocratic Crawley family.

Visit a unique 13th Century manor house and historic farm buildings, which was used extensively in series 4 to 6 as Downton Abbey’s Yew Tree Farm. You will have the chance to explore the home of the Drewe family, where Lady Edith’s child is brought up, and later home to Mr Mason. Discover the house, grounds, gardens and see the animals that live on the farm.

At lunchtime you’ll find yourself arriving at an idyllic and traditional Cotswold countryside pub, which was used for the filming of Lady Sybil’s elopement with the family chauffeur, Branson. You’ll have time to enjoy a hearty meal of seasonal, high-quality food and sample some local beers and ales, before exploring more of the Cotswold towns and villages in the afternoon, such as Burford, Stow on the Wold, Chipping Campden and Broadway.

Highclere Castle

Whilst our Downton Abbey Cotswold Tour itinerary does not typically include a visit to Highclere Castle (the real-life location of ‘Downton Abbey’), tickets can be arranged for select dates during its’ short open season each year. Availability is incredibly limited so tickets can sadly not be guaranteed, however when booked with enough notice and where possible, we will endeavour to incorporate a visit to Highclere Castle.
